Manic Depression Records – MD 158 - LP 2023 Italian synth-driven darkwave project Fall Shock is the sonic output of the elusive Francesco Kay and DAM. After a few back and forths, dance-ins, and sit-downs since the departure of Markus O in 2022, the band found a new rhythm, drafting what would become their latest work : Universal Unit Crime. In their new release, Kay refrained from speaking about himself, focusing instead on his disapproval of everyday crimes of humanity…specifically the isolation that results from nonconformity. The album is dedicated to two people in his life who recently passed, left alone by their community to fight their battles alone. The album also waxes poetic on social media, where a chase for fame can lead to one’s own downfall. The first single, “Protect” is delivering troubled murmurs, whimsical keys, deliberate beats, and captivating guitar strains evoke half-forgotten daydreams and far-off moods, conjuring classic EBM and Dark Electro with modern dance-driven Darkwave sensibilities. Icy Cold Records – ICR069-LP, Manic Depression – MD136-LP (2022) Winter Severity Index comes with its third LP with a new approach in composition, renovated inspirations but the same attention to sound research. A massive presence of synths, played by both Simona and Alessandra, no more bass guitar and rare guitar phrases with the familiar Simona's liquid new wave sound, as a sort of trademark of the project. The name of the album, deliberately in Italian to underline the intimate and personal urge of expression of its contents by the two musicians, is connected with the idea of change. DISGELO (Thaw but also detente) is about the necessity of adaptation to new phases that unavoidably occur in everyone's existence. This process emerges in all its difficulties but also in its fascinating aspects: farewells, passages of time, death, cosmic cycles, climate changes, but also the insuppressible urge of discovery and confrontation, the opening to love and new relationships, everything related with putting ourselves under question with the unavoidable consequence of a deeper self awareness and a true admission of responsibility in our choices. The LP was composed and recorded mostly before the pandemic period and already presented as live preview in Cologne, Madrid and Stockholm with great appreciation by the audience. For this third album, DEAR DEER wanted to mix dancefloor, disco and Berlin atmosphere.This third step confirms their desire to make people dance while bringing a new serenity to certain tracks. 'Collect and reject', continues to dig into the musical references close to their hearts: we recognize the drum machine TR 808 mixed with the TR 809, sound textures close to Giorgio Moroder, guitars in a nod to the avant-garde rock of SonicYouth.This desire to tend towards the ultimate nightclub track had been explored with the second album, but in a more punk and aggressive way. “Collect and reject” is intended as a electro and rounder evolution of their work.Beyond this atmospheric alchemy, there are also more collaborations on this album than on the previous record.
