La Valse was a New Wave band from Breda, a city in the south of the Netherlands. Active from early 1983 until late 1985, the band performed live many times in local clubs and released the highly collectible and sought-after vinyl 7“ WINTER/SORROW“ in autumn of 1983. It was almost unknown to collectors that the band recorded many more tracks during their three years of existence. The songs were spread over six tapes, over the years owned by member ROB SLEGT. All this tapes were destroyed in a fire in Rob’s house many years ago and all recordings seemed to have been lost forever… In 2017, however, POL DOORNEKAMP, the singer of the band, accidentally discovered 1:1 copies of the six tapes in an old shoebox in the attic of her house. The tapes are probably the holy grail of dutch wave music and a treasure in itself. I selected the tracks together with POL DOORNEKAMP and will present them on a DOUBLE VINYL ALBUM. All tracks from the vinyl album will also appear on a CD that comes with the double-album. At the beginning, under the moniker of Kapitän Sehnsucht, they were in charge of making the soundtrack for some seedy sex shows on Hamburg’s famous ‘Mile of Sin’. After a while, the boys found that not so satisfying and, through it was a well-paid job, they decided to leave, hoping to break into the world of pop music as Boytronic. They already had some demo songs that got the attention of Mercury Records. The first single “You” was recorded highly influenced by the sound of New Order and Patrick Cowley. It didn’t do very well at the beginning. It was just a moderate club hit, but soon after they got lucky and performed “You” on an important German TV Show. Immediately after the broadcasting, sales climbed like a rocket and reached 80,000 copies in the first week and the single became a major hit in the official German sales-charts, reaching position 10. This sudden success was followed by the recordings of the debut album “The Working Model”, that was finished in only fourteen days and released at the end of 1983. “The Working Model” still today is considered as one of the best techno-pop releases coming from Germany in the 80’s. An album more than 40 years old and still sounding so fresh and authentic! This highly welcome re-release of this CLASSIC album includes all tracks from the original Album, but also lots of classic remixes of “You”, “Diamonds and Loving Arms”, “Trigger Track” and “Bryllyant”.  All songs written and recorded in the early 80’s. “The Pre-Working Demos” is a collection of home demo tracks recorded during the early 80’s. These are some of the very first songs composed by Holger Wobker and Peter Sawatzki and recorded just on cassette tapes. Some are sung in German, others in English. There is also a first version of “You” initially called “Youmavision”. Some of these demos, that Holger used to play inside the record store where he worked, helped the band to get first attention and a contract to release their first and best-selling single “You” and the above debut album in 1983.

Entries like “Falling”, “Through Blinds” and “Wasting Days” swim and sway in the night, painting bleak, darkly romantic pictures of love and loss; while industrial-tinged tracks like “God Whispers” or “Black Bag” scathe and sneer and stalk, shades of something sinister and paranoid shining through. On the album’s themes and sound, SOFT VEIN’s Justin Chamberlain says: “This album is more about me as an observer of others, and sometimes even feeling like an observer in my own life. I wrote in this very ‘detached narrator’ sort of way…a lot of yearning, watching and waiting kind of stuff. That’s where the title came from. There’s in- fluences you’d probably expect like Depeche Mode or Clan of Xymox or Nitzer Ebb, but I was also heavily influenced by The Blue Nile and Genesis and Prince. Film and video game scores too, especially Brad Fiedel’s work on the Terminator 2 soundtrack. I was revisiting a lot of things that are very nostalgic for me while making this record.” Sonically, the album stays true to these themes, eschewing the icy cold landscape of the first album for heat, desire and danger - mixing/mastering engineer Ewan Alastair Kay (Kontravoid, Zanias) is responsible for the album’s polished sound. Beds of cascading synthesizers and dreamy guitars reveal an aching sentimentality. Rhythms pump and throb from drum machines and bass synthesizers. The Spanish trio DARKWAYS have released several recordings digitally over the last two years and now present „Resonance", their first album on vinyl and CD. The band´s self-description is „Darkwave from Barcelona with various influences and a passion for electronic sounds/Post-Punk." There is a lot of truth in this, but basically it is pure Gothrock in the style of the 90s for long stretches, which is unfortunately rarely heard today. The catchy production and repeated synth- sounds also provide enough material for the Darkwave-clubs, where DARKWAYS are sure to attract some attention. Songs like „Shadowdancer" and especially „I like the Night (And the Night likes Me)" will quickly find their fans. „Inexistance" is reminiscent of Guitar Wave with driving drums and Goth-vocals, a mixture that is guaranteed to reach an audience. „Neon Lights" is not, as one might expect, dedicated to the 80s, but pure 90s Darkwave. „Madness", on the other hand, rocks hard and is guaranteed to be a live favourite. Finally, „More than Dreams" also offers the certain rock-influence and could also make the album interesting for mainstream listeners. In the end, however, as mentioned at the beginning, it is Gothrock with Darkwave-vibes, high catchiness and pleasantly unaffected vocals. Solid as a rock and a candidate for a huge surprise success! Dominic Daub´s solo project, supported live by Tobias Dupont, has always been known for its mix of Minimal Synth and EBM with a quirky sense of humour and always gets the dancefloors moving. With the new album (presumably titled after a surrealist film drama by Luis Bunuel „Le Fantôme de la liberté“) a new chapter has been written, with song titles that – if you understand German - alone making you sit up and take notice. As you can already guess, there is a second, sometimes socio-critical and political level here and there alongside the humour but it never slips completely into the foreground. This means that „Das Gespenst…” can be „consumed“ throughout as a danceable Electro-album in the club, but can also be listened to at home in peace and quiet. Which is not always the case with Electro- albums. Already the album’s first track, in a dark, minimalist style, is reminiscent of The Klinik´s best days and is sure to serve as a concert opener to put the audience in a certain mood straight away. The dark and experimental „Extravagant“ continues, somewhere between Esplendor Geometrico and Liaisons Dangereuses. Then, for the first time, the Minimal-Pop of „Goldene Zeiten“ (possibly named after a Bunuel-film, too) aims for the club dancefloors, directly followed by the ironic „Gross, Blond, Tuberkulös“. As the title promises, things get lighter again with „Deine Mudda hört Die Krupps“ (Your mom listens to Die Krupps). A catchy tune that is sure to quickly become a scene standard. Other songs are vaguely reminiscent of Welle: Erdball or purest Minimal Synth at its best – and yes: the last song „Marian“ is exactly what you´d expect...a cover of The Sisters Of Mercy that also shows QEK JUNIOR's courage and insouciance in the face of seemingly unassailable icons. Musically close to the style of Neue Neue Deutsche Welle with elements of post-punk and darkwave, the lyrics tie in with personal experiences of arriving in the Danube metropolis of Vienna. They explore a field of tension between privilege and loneliness, between hope and resignation. KKD remain true to the principles of a certain ambiguity and openness for contradictions, but are not afraid to admit to doubts and existential fears.
